Turkey is by far one of the most popular destinations — Antalya and Alanya for holidaymakers, Istanbul for city breaks, Cappadocia for the adventurous. But you need internet, and since Turkey isn't an EU country, your home roaming allowance doesn't apply here: you either buy an expensive roaming bundle from your home carrier, or an eSIM.
In Facebook groups, the names Yesim and Airalo come up again and again. Both work in Turkey — but once you factor in the real cost, in 2026 neither is really worth it. For Turkey, the price gap is even bigger than for other destinations: for the 10 GB plan, eSIM Surfer offers roughly half the price of Yesim or Airalo for the same thing, and for the 20 GB plan Airalo costs almost twice as much. For a two-week family holiday with two or three phones, the difference can easily reach several euros.
Yesim's Turkey quirk: limited access within the country
Something rarely mentioned in group recommendations: according to Yesim's own information, access to the Yesim app and website in Turkey can be disrupted by local restrictions. In practice this means:
- you have to buy and install the plan before you leave,
- if your data runs out while you're there, topping up can be awkward,
- if a problem arises while you're there, the provider's interface may not be accessible.
In any case, it's worth installing an eSIM at home over Wi-Fi regardless of provider — but having your provider's interface work smoothly while you're there is a separate consideration in Turkey.
Airalo Merhaba: reliable but expensive
Airalo's Turkey plan family (Merhaba) is a decent service: 30-day validity, reliable performance on the Turkcell network. The problem is simply the price: at every tier you pay roughly one and a half to two times eSIM Surfer's price, in dollars, with the card-payment exchange markup on top.
And since every provider uses the same Turkish networks (Turkcell, Vodafone Turkey, Türk Telekom), the higher price gets you neither faster internet nor better coverage — in Antalya, Bodrum and Istanbul, the same 4G/LTE (5G in Istanbul) awaits everyone.
Language and support: the underrated factor
Yesim's and Airalo's apps are available in several major languages, and their support is English-language chat. As long as everything works, this doesn't seem important — but eSIM problems (won't connect, won't activate, data used up) typically come up at the very start of the holiday, at the airport.
eSIM Surfer offers transparent pricing and helpful support. For anyone who doesn't want to spend the first hours of their holiday with English-language chatbots, this is a decisive argument in itself.
