Activating an eSIM isn't complicated, but the first time it helps to know exactly what to expect. This guide walks you through the whole process step by step, on both iPhone and Android.
Before you start: a checklist
Before installing the eSIM, make sure of the following:
- Carrier-unlocked phone: The device must not be locked to a carrier
- eSIM-compatible model: iPhone XR/XS or newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 or newer, Google Pixel 3 or newer
- Active internet connection: Wi-Fi or mobile data is needed to download the profile
- Up-to-date operating system: iOS 14.1+ on iPhone, the latest version on Android
- eSIM Surfer app: Download it, buy the plan, and keep the QR code handy

- Open the Settings app
- Tap Mobile Network (or Cellular)
- Choose Add eSIM
- Tap Use QR Code
- Hold your phone's camera over the QR code — it scans automatically
- Confirm the profile installation with Continue
- Wait for the profile to download (a few seconds)
- Set a label for the profile (e.g. 'Travel' or 'Turkey')
Setting data usage on iPhone
After installation, it's important to set which SIM you use for what:
- Settings → Mobile Network → Mobile Data: select the eSIM
- Default line (for calls): keep the physical SIM (your home number)
- Data roaming: turn it on for the eSIM, and off for the physical SIM
eSIM activation on Android (Samsung, Pixel)
Samsung (One UI):
- Settings → Connections → SIM manager
- Tap Add eSIM
- Choose Scan QR code
- Scan the QR code
- Confirm the installation
Google Pixel:
- Settings → Network & internet → SIMs
- Tap Download a SIM
- Scan the QR code
- Follow the on-screen instructions
When does the data plan activate?
eSIM data plans have different activation types:
| Type | When does it start? | When to install it? |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic (local network) | On arrival in the destination | At home, before you leave |
| On QR-code scan | At the moment of installation | On arrival (over Wi-Fi) |
| On a specified date | On the day you choose | Any time before |
Most eSIM Surfer plans are the first type: you install it at home, and it activates automatically on arrival.
Troubleshooting
'eSIM not supported' error message
- Check that your phone is carrier-unlocked
- Update the operating system
- Restart your phone and try again
The QR code won't scan
- Make sure the screen brightness is at maximum
- Try holding the code a bit closer or further away
- If you're scanning from a screenshot, use manual entry: you'll find the SM-DP+ address and activation code in the eSIM Surfer app
No internet in the destination
- Check that the eSIM is selected as your mobile data connection
- Turn on data roaming for the eSIM: Settings → Mobile Network → eSIM profile → Data roaming
- Restart your phone
Summary
Installing an eSIM takes 2–3 minutes. The most important things: install it at home over Wi-Fi, and turn data roaming on for the eSIM and off for the physical SIM. That way you have internet the moment you arrive.
