When travelling abroad, internet is essential these days: Google Maps, WhatsApp, Uber, hotel bookings, finding restaurants — you need it for almost everything. But roaming fees and data usage can easily catch you out. Here are 10 practical tips for using mobile internet smartly abroad.
1. Install an eSIM before you leave
Before departure, buy and install an eSIM data plan for your destination. That way you have internet the moment you arrive, with no need to hunt for a SIM card at the airport. In the eSIM Surfer app you can pay in your local currency.
2. Download offline maps
Google Maps lets you download whole regions offline. Open Google Maps → profile icon → Offline maps → select your target area. GPS works via satellite, so you can navigate without internet.
3. Turn off data roaming on your physical SIM
If you're using an eSIM, be sure to turn off data roaming on your home physical SIM. Otherwise the phone may route traffic through the expensive roaming service. Settings → Mobile Network → physical SIM → Data roaming: off.
4. Disable automatic cloud sync
Automatic uploading of photos and videos (iCloud, Google Photos) uses a lot of data. Set it to sync only over Wi-Fi: Google Photos → Settings → Back up over Wi-Fi only.
5. Use Wi-Fi calling
If your carrier supports Wi-Fi calling (VoWiFi), you can make and receive calls on your home number over hotel Wi-Fi, with no roaming fee. Ask your carrier whether this feature is available.
6. Set WhatsApp to data-saver mode
WhatsApp → Settings → Storage and data → turn on Use less data for calls. Also disable automatic media downloads on mobile data: download photos and videos only over Wi-Fi.
7. Share the hotspot with your family
A larger eSIM data plan can cover the whole family's internet. Turn on the Wi-Fi hotspot on your phone and the rest of the family can connect to it. A 10 GB plan is typically enough for 5–7 days for a family of four.
8. Install a VPN
On public Wi-Fi networks (cafés, airports, hotels) a VPN encrypts your traffic. In some countries (the Emirates, China, Turkey) certain services may also be restricted without a VPN.
9. Download the offline translator
Google Translate lets you download language packs offline. So you can translate text without internet, and the camera feature can even recognise menus and signs.
10. Monitor your data usage
Before you travel, reset the data usage counter in your phone's settings. That way you can see exactly how much data you've used and switch to a data-saving mode in time if your allowance is running low.
Summary
With these tips you can make efficient use of your eSIM data plan and avoid unnecessary data consumption. The key: prepare at home (download offline content) + use it consciously abroad.
